Alexander Brattell photographs London where it changes; where one zone gives way to another; where there are options, pathways and spaces which are often neither immediately apparent nor well travelled.

The images he captures are of interstitial areas. The point at which the dark eats the light at the tunnel mouth. The moment when the pram skeleton shimmers out of existence, drawn down towards the canal floor. The emptiness of the docks framed by steel crane dollies.

In this crowded city where the sky is excluded by concrete, steel and glass, these images are a rich and rare exploration of space. They direct the viewer to look for the moments of escape and places where there is calm and beauty, between the railings, over the parapets and through the gaps.

The exhibition invokes London, on which the present sometimes lies in such thin layers. It scratches at these surfaces using photographs and words to evoke spirit and history.

no matter how slow the film, Spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer it has chosen.
